Signs a Tree Needs Trimming

A branch with no leaves in the middle of a leafed out canopy is already dead, and it will not come back. Bark peeling off one limb while the rest of the trunk holds tight bark says the same thing. Look for limbs that cross and rub, because the rubbing wears through the bark and opens the wood underneath. Watch for thin shoots standing straight up off a big horizontal limb, which usually means the tree lost canopy somewhere and is racing to replace it. Topping a Tree Makes It More Dangerous

A topped tree grows back taller, faster and weaker than it was before the cut. Cutting a trunk or a main limb back to a bare stub leaves wood that cannot seal, so the stub rots from the cut downward. New shoots sprout in a ring around that rotting stub, and they hold on only at the outer layer of wood. Give them a few seasons. Now they are long, heavy, and attached to decay. That is the limb that ends up through a fence. Height can be reduced without topping, and that is what a proper crown reduction is for.

Where the Cut Lands Decides How It Heals

A tree seals a wound from the branch collar, the swollen ring of tissue where the limb meets the trunk. Cut flush to the trunk and that collar is gone, so the tree is left with a hole it cannot close. Leave a long stub and the stub dies back, and the rot walks inward from there. The right cut sits just outside the collar and follows the angle of the branch bark ridge. Small wounds close. Big ones stay open a long time, which is why steady small cuts beat a few huge ones.

Branches Near Roofs, Wires and Fences

A limb resting on a roof sands the shingles every time the wind moves it. It also hands rats a bridge onto the house. Clearance cuts should be made so the branch stays off the roof in a storm, not just on a calm afternoon. Wires are a different animal. Anything growing into the service wires or the lines above them belongs to the utility or a line clearance crew, and no homeowner should put a pole saw near them.
