Tree Pruning

Careful cuts on the right limbs, so young trees grow strong and older trees stay sound.

Pruning is the cut by cut side of tree care: taking the right wood, at the right season, in a way the tree can seal. JCC Tree Service prunes trees in Yuba City. What you cut matters. When you cut it, and how the cut is made, matter just as much.

Season Changes the Risk on Some Species

Cuts made while a tree is dormant and the weather is dry heal with less exposure to the insects and spores that move in through fresh wounds. Some species are known for this, and oaks are the common example, since pruning during the warm wet part of the year opens the door to problems carried in by beetles. Dead and broken wood is the exception, because a hazard does not get to wait for a better month. Storm damage comes out when it is found. Cosmetic and structural work can be scheduled for the dry dormant window instead.

The First Cut on a Heavy Limb Goes Underneath

A heavy limb cut in one pass from the top will tear a strip of bark down the trunk as it falls, and that tear is a bigger wound than the cut was. The way around it is three cuts. An undercut a distance out from the trunk, a top cut a little past that to drop the weight, then the final cut just outside the branch collar on the short stub that is left. Now the limb has no weight on it and it cannot peel. It is slower by a minute. It saves the trunk.

Prune Young Trees for Structure, Not for Looks

The defects that take a mature tree apart are usually built into it when it is young and cheap to fix. A tree with two competing leaders growing into a tight V is the main one, because bark gets pressed into that union instead of wood, and that seam has little strength. Picking one leader early, and shortening the competing stem instead of ripping it out, sets the tree up for decades. Same with branches all coming off the trunk at one height, and with low limbs that will be in the way later. Small cuts now beat big cuts later, which is also how you avoid ever needing a crown reduction on a tree over the roof.

Painting a Pruning Cut Does Not Help It

Wound paint and tar do not speed healing, and a sealed wound can hold moisture against the wood. Trees do not heal the way skin does. They wall the damage off and grow over it from the edges, and that process runs on the tree's own health, not on a product. What actually helps is a clean cut in the right place, a sharp saw, and leaving the branch collar intact so the tree has tissue to grow from. Keeping the tree watered through a dry stretch helps more than anything in a can. We prune trees for homeowners in Yuba City and the areas we serve, along with regular tree trimming.
